September 15: My fabric selection

Wonderful Time Sew-along
Layer Cake “Holly Jolly” from Moda Fabrics

Complemented with a dark gray Moda Bella Solids

I am happy, I have made my choice. After some deliberation, I decided on a Layer Cake so that I would have plenty of choices while sewing. There are 42 squares of fabric á 10 inches in a Layer Cake, here from the “Holly Jolly” collection by Urban Chiks. The colors are quite pop and the fabric patterns are cool retro, I love that!

As a background I take a dark gray Moda Bella Solids, there the colors then later come out really nice! If you also flirt with a Christmas Layer Cake flirting, take a look here.

September 19: Preparation of fabrics

You know that I am a fan of starched fabrics, because the so-called piecing, i.e. the sewing together of the small pieces of fabric in the patchwork, is then much more accurate and sewing is then also much more fun for me. I use exclusively Spray starch from Sonett because this is not only ecological, but also smells natural and is absolutely residue-free. If you’ve never done this before, you should definitely give it a try, because our pretty Christmas baubles in particular are sometimes quite small.

And this is how it works:

  • lay out a bath towel as large as possible
  • Lay out fabric on top smoothly
  • spray one side saturated --> the fabric may be calmly tend to be wet
  • Leave to dry completely overnight, preferably on a clothes horse
  • iron

The fabric then has a stiff feel. Here you can see my starched fabrics.

Yesterday we completed the 1st block incl. Instructions for the chain published – and my tip to you is: sew all chain blocks at once! Then it will be much easier or more relaxed in the coming weeks. How the first ball is sewn, you can see in the Instruction (Link above here in the post), but here show the steps again on photos:
