Colour is an important tool for anyone involved in design. Be it in the choice of fabrics, in working with contrast or in the psychology of colour. As a fashion designer, I studied colour theories and their application, but every design direction has its own requirements, and patchwork is different from fashion (although fabric is the material of choice here too :-)). In patchwork, we often work with many colours and shades of colour, so it is important to know how to use them. I still have a long way to go and I’m looking forward to it!

Here I show a wall quilt in a triadic colour harmony. This means that three colours are equally spaced on the colour wheel. This results in a gaudy, loud effect, which I softened somewhat by using so-called inks, i.e. the respective colour mixed with white.

Moda Bella Solids is a wonderful way to play here, because the extensive selection of fabrics covers every desired shade. I used the Lazy Angle Ruler from Creative Grids for the blocks, as it allows you to quickly cut strips at the right angle so that the two pieces fit together perfectly with 1/4 inch seam allowance.
